Linda Masarira, a seasoned human rights activist and opposition politician, has passed away at 43.

Masarira, who led the Labour Economists and African Democrats (LEAD) party, died in Harare early Sunday, as reported by close associates.

“With profound sorrow and a heavy heart, we announce the passing of LEAD president Linda Tsungirirai Masarira,” stated her friend and associate Abigale Mupambi.

Mupambi mentioned that Masarira had been dealing with health issues but seemed to be on the mend recently.

An outspoken advocate for women’s and children’s rights, Masarira was previously involved with the People’s Democratic Party and later served as the spokesperson for the Thokozani Khupe-led MDC-T before establishing LEAD in 2019.

She sought to run in the 2023 presidential election but could not secure a nomination after the fees were increased from US$1,000 to US$20,000.
