As urban centers across Zimbabwe experience a much-needed wave of infrastructure redevelopment and commercial construction, a critical question arises: what are we willing to sacrifice in the name of modernization? Too often, historic architecture and green public spaces are demolished to make way for generic concrete commercial buildings.

True urban renewal does not mean erasing city identity. World-class cities thrive by seamlessly integrating modern state-of-the-art amenities while meticulously preserving their architectural heritage and cultural landmarks. Our city planners and property developers must adopt a more holistic vision that respects history while accommodating growth.

We must enact stricter municipal zoning bylaws that protect historic structures and mandate the inclusion of green parks and public plazas in all major commercial developments.
