The digital economy offers a frontier for Southern African entrepreneurs
Opinion

The rapid expansion of mobile broadband infrastructure across Southern Africa is quietly transforming the business landscape, creating unprecedented opportunities for digitally native startups. From fintech solutions simplifying cross-border remittances to e-commerce platforms connecting rural artisans to urban consumers, innovation is thriving.
However, to fully capitalize on this digital dividend, regulatory frameworks must evolve faster. Policymakers must reduce taxation on internet connectivity, streamline online business registration, and enact supportive data protection laws that build consumer trust without stifling startup growth.
If we provide our young innovators with affordable connectivity and supportive regulation, the digital economy can become the largest driver of formal job creation over the next decade.
